Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization

About ORIC

Meaningful and product-oriented research with an impact on the industry is the top priority of PAF-IAST. The Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) at the Institute strives to bridge the gap that has existed for decades between the Pakistani Academia and Industry through close liaison and frequent interactions.

ORIC at the Institute plays a pivotal role not only in helping faculty and students to develop research proposals and get their research funded, but it also facilitates the researchers in the commercialization of their ideas and research products. This office regularly arranges meetings of faculty with the industry to help build industrial linkages of the faculty. Through these linkages, technical problems of the Industry are solved in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner that results ultimately in technology transfer. The ORIC at the Institute organizes awareness seminars related to R&D activities on the campus, inviting different industry and research organizations providing visibility to the research potentials and credentials of the Institute.

Through the business incubators and technology park at PAF-IAST, this office offers unprecedented opportunities for startups and venture capitalists to set up business enterprises on the campus. In a very short period of its existence, this office has successfully built an echo that has very recently culminated in the award of a certificate to PAF-IAST as a zone developer from the Special Technology Zone Authority (STZA) of Pakistan. Through its strategic planning, this office is set to help PAF-IAST emerge as a major player in contributing to the knowledge economy of Pakistan.

Director ORIC message:

The PAF-IAST was established with the slogan of “Skilling Pakistan”. The focus here is product-based research. For this purpose, the faculty and students are motivated to conduct research which has a tangible impact on society. For this purpose, the faculty members and students are encouraged to conduct research which can be commercialized and can create a pleasant impact on society. These impacts may be in terms of jobs & business opportunities creation, a positive impact on health, food security, environment, energy etc.

Research

The Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) continued to drive PAF-IAST’s research agenda with strategic focus, measurable growth, and academic rigor. In 2024, the university’s research output and funding activities demonstrated both maturity and momentum.

High-Impact Publications: A total of 132 journal publications were produced during the year, achieving a cumulative Impact Factor of 556-a clear testament to the rising quality and visibility of research conducted at PAF-IAST across multiple disciplines

On the national front, 26 projects were approved across diverse disciplines, backed by a total funding of PKR 34.14 million. These grants were sourced through a range of premier national agencies, signifying both the breadth and credibility of PAF-IAST’s research vision.

This diverse and growing funding portfolio speaks volumes about PAF-IAST’s fast-maturing research ecosystem. Far from being a peripheral activity, research at PAF-IAST is a driving force-integrated into curricula, powered by industry linkages, and designed to generate real-world solutions. These accomplishments stand as a testament to the institute’s strategic foresight, its faculty’s research caliber, and its commitment to building a self-reliant, innovation-led national economy.

The Fabric of Innovation : An Equilibrium of Inquiry and Impact

In 2024, graduate research at PAF-IAST reached a landmark year, with 89 MS research projects completed each a testament to the fusion of intellectual pursuit and national relevance. What sets this body of work apart is the almost perfect balance it achieves between curiosity-driven basic research and solution-driven applied research.

29 projects (32.5%) ventured into exploratory areas-laying the groundwork for future technologies and knowledge systems.

18 projects (20%) were published in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the global scientific discourse and enhancing Pakistan’s academic visibility.

This rare equilibrium reflects a research ecosystem that values both the immediacy of practical outcomes and the long-term promise of pure inquiry.

Fueling Discovery: A Story of Passion-Powered Research

The funding patterns behind this research journey narrate a story of exceptional dedication. In 2024, 85% of all graduate research was self-financed, underscoring the unwavering commitment of students and faculty who believed in their ideas and invested in them personally. This level of self-drive is emblematic of a research culture that thrives not on dependence, but on ownership and resolve.

While private and industry-sponsored funding stood at 4%, this figure reveals significant untapped potential-an opportunity the institution actively pursues through stronger outreach and collaborative frameworks. Together, these numbers speak to more than funding they reflect the resilience, resourcefulness, and rising ambition of a young university already eshaping Pakistan’s applied research landscape.

Innovation

Faculty Innovation Spotlight

Dr. Muhammad Muqeet‘s pioneering work at PAF-IAST led to the successful development and commercialization of The Neem Soap under the faculty startup “NEAM Engineering“. This innovative product blends traditional herbal wisdom with scientific rigor, utilizing Azadirachta indica (neem) extracts for their proven antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

Designed to treat acne, infections, and promote skin healing, the soap is free from harsh chemicals and caters to the rising demand for natural skincare solutions. Securing IP protection (Application No. 772377) and marketed via platforms like Daraz and eBay.

A Growing Commercial Vision

The year 2024 marked a decisive expansion in PAF-IAST’s commercialization footprint, transforming research capabilities into revenue-generating services that directly serve regional industries and the public sector. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the university launched a wide array of advanced testing and diagnostic solutions, establishing itself as a growing hub for industrial problem-solving and scientific applications.

Diagnostic Services: Enabling Precision Health Solutions

Through cutting-edge molecular biology and genetics labs, PAF-IAST offered 40 specialized diagnostic tests, addressing critical healthcare needs. Services included Hepatitis B & C Viral DNA quantification, Sanger Sequencing, Thalassemia detection, and BRCA1/BRCA2 genetic testing-all aligned with global clinical standards. The anticipated launch of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) reflects further strategic expansion. This stream alone generated PKR 1.5 million in revenue, showcasing growing demand for advanced, in-house clinical diagnostics.
