Lab Facilities

Our world-class facilities make PAF IAST one of Pakistan's best universities for research and study.

Machine and Power Systems

The machine and power systems laboratory is dedicated for training the undergraduate and graduate students for safe, reliable, and optimum generation, distribution, conversion, measurement, and control of electric energy. Work includes lab experiments, testing, and computer simulation of electric power apparatus, equipment, structures, materials, and systems.

DLD and Embedded Systems

This lab covers the courses of Digital Logic Design, Introduction to Embedded Systems, Digital Systems Design, and Internet-of-Things. The experiments start from the implementation of basic digital concepts and culminate into advanced digital and embedded systems.

Electronics and Circuits

Equipped with modern measurement apparatus, this laboratory provides hands-on training to undergraduate engineering students in all courses related to electric and electronic circuits. This state-of-the-art facility helps students to see beyond the theory and serves as a foundation for the subjects taught during advanced semesters.

Computer

With an inventory of high-performance modern computers, our dedicated Computer lab adequately meets the computing needs of all students of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

Physics

Physics Laboratory is fully geared to impart experimental training in the areas of mechanics, electricity, and magnetism to the undergraduate students of various science and engineering disciplines. The state-of-the-art demonstration kits, and apparatus are available to illustrate various principles of physics. It is a great resource that helps students relate theoretical knowledge with practical work.

Workshop

This laboratory supports basic courses in machine tools, machining, and electrical wiring and safety at the undergraduate level. The experiments performed in the laboratory are designed to reinforce understanding of fundamental principles and knowledge required to visualize various phenomena encountered in practical applications.

DSP and Communication

DSP and Communication Lab enhances the understanding of signal processing and communications. This lab comprises state of the art equipment by National Instruments and Rohde & Schwarz to help students carry out lab experiments and conduct projects in the areas of digital and wireless communications, RF and microwave engineering, antennas, and digital signal processing.

Control and Instrumentation

Thin-client computers (Virtual Desktop Interface machines), Base Platform for Controls with Wifi Connectivity, Controls Add on Board for Base Platform (DC Motor/Inverted Pendulum) and Sensors Board for Base Platform

Faculty achievements:

Dr. Muhammad Aamir, Assistant Professor Department of Electrical Engineering has secured a grant of PKR 3.6 million for the project titled "Design of Hybrid Power Management Unit for the operation of Point Machine System in Pakistan Railway for efficient traffic control". The project is funded by National Research Programme for Universities (NRPU), Pakistan and will support multiple bachelors, masters, and PhD students enrolled in Department of Electrical Engineering.
Project Abstract: Pakistan railways faced the problems of train delays due to the unavailability of power for the signaling system. This causes loss to the economy and damages the reputation of the organization. Therefore, a novel power management system has been proposed that can provide uninterruptible power to the signaling system. The inrush current of the induction motor is controlled using a suitable variable frequency drive. The photovoltaic system provides uninterrupted power to the UPS system.

Student achievements

1. The students of our BE Electrical Engineering program of Batch 2020, Muhammad Suleman and Muhammad Usman Jadoon, have been offered fellowships in NewVative. During the fellowship period students received PKR 20,000/- per month. As part of the fellowship program, they completed their final year project (FYP) with NewVative.

NewVative is a technology startup that provides Cold chain monitoring solutions to hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical industry. They have recently received multiple grants to improve their indigenously developed IoT system. NewVative is also looking to expand into food industry aiming to provide asset monitoring services. Usman and Suleman will be actively involved in developing the prototype for this system. They will be offered permanent positions with market competitive salary upon graduation. We wish them best of Luck.

2. The students of our BE Electrical Engineering program of Batch 2021, Muhammad Anique Faizan and Malik Ahmer have been offered part-time jobs in Rapidev. These students are receiving a stipend along with flexible working hours that they can manage with their studies.

Rapidev is an Islamabad based tech startup that is developing next generation products and solutions. It is leading in developing innovative solutions to tackle the complex challenges. With a solution-driven approach, they are rapidly expanding their impact across Pakistan, establishing strong service and marketing networks.

3. Syeda Ezza Haider, a student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Pak-Austria Fachhochschule is awarded prestigious fully-funded U.S.-Pakistan Women’s Council Future of Women in Energy Scholars Program from a pool of more than 500 talented female applicants. She participated in a rigorous academic coursework on energy production, economics, and policy.  Following the two-week course from June 26th May to 6th June 2024, she participated in a weeklong familiarization program focused on advancing women’s participation in the energy economy in Pakistan. This incredible opportunity is designed to inspire the next generation of talent, encouraging them to pursue careers in the energy sector or advanced degrees in energy-related disciplines, with a special emphasis on renewable resources.

The U.S.-Pakistan Women’s Council, a public-private partnership dedicated to increasing women’s economic participation in Pakistan, along with the generous support from Texas A&M University at Qatar, the U.S. Department of Energy, and USAID, are making this transformative journey possible for students like Syeda Ezza Haider and other scholars.
